Pocklington is ideally placed as a base from which to tour historic York, Hull, Beverley, the Yorkshire Wolds and Coast, the North Yorkshire Moors and the Yorkshire Dales.

East Yorkshire is a hidden treasure for walkers, with unspoilt views across the Wolds and Dales, with many walks to suit all abilities in the immediate locality.

Prearranged transport is provided to the Wolds Way.

There is a scenic drive which lasts nearly fifty miles taking you through many beautiful villages and vales in the surrounding areas.

The Wolds Gliding Club welcomes day members and is in walking distance of Ashfield Farmhouse.

Fishing is a popular pastime and there are many lakes designated to pursue this interest.

Archaeologists will find the area of great interest; Wharram Percy is famous for being Britain's longest archaeological dig - lasting over forty years.

Pocklington Canal

The Pocklington Canal is one of the most important waterways for wildlife in the whole of the UK.

The Canal flows through the Vale of York from the foothills of the Yorkshire Wolds to join the River Derwent.

You can walk the canal's entire length on a grassy towpath.

The Pocklington Canal fell into disuse when the railways arrived - now about half of its ten mile length is open to boats - but the rest is unrestored. It is here that wildlife has really moved in.

About Pocklington

The pride of Pocklington is its Arts Centre which houses a theatre and cinema where all the latest films are shown. Many famous artists have walked the stage including George Melly, Ricky Ross, Paul Jones, Midge Ure and Barry Norman.

There is a sports centre which includes a swimming pool, badminton and squash courts and a keep-fit centre. A bowling green is situated next door.

Tennis courts are situated on West Green and there are clubs for the footballers, rugby players and cricket enthusiasts.

Pocklington has many unusual claims to fame. It was the last place in England to burn a witch at the stake! So beware ladies! Also, the Cheshire Cat from "Alice in Wonderland" is to be found inside the church.
